On October 28, 2026, the decentralized finance protocol Yield Basis issued a dual-purpose announcement that concurrently disclosed a critical security vulnerability and unveiled a sophisticated strategy to re-engineer the fee structure and liquidity management of its WETH-based pools on Curve Finance. The vulnerability, which allowed traders to extract pool value through a specific deposit-and-withdraw sequence, is set to be mitigated through a new "permissionless propAMM" design, pending the conclusion of active governance votes.
The Vulnerability Disclosure and Mitigation Strategy
The security concern, identified by the Yield Basis team, involved a path that permitted users to extract value from liquidity pools by bypassing standard fee protocols. By executing a specific sequence of deposits followed by immediate withdrawals, traders were able to manipulate the protocol’s accounting to their advantage.
In response, the team has proposed a technical patch that enforces a strict constraint on liquidity-token (LP) deposits. Under the new design, any new LP deposit must be accompanied by a debt obligation proportional to the minted LP collateral, within a strict margin of 1 basis point (0.01%). This mechanism is intended to neutralize the arbitrage path that previously allowed for value extraction. Yield Basis has opted to withhold the granular technical specifications of this fix until the rollout has been successfully implemented across all relevant pools, a standard practice intended to prevent exploitation of the vulnerability during the transition period.
Chronology of Governance and Deployment
The initiative is governed by Yield Basis proposal 60 and is intrinsically linked to the broader Curve Finance governance vote 1508. As of the time of the announcement, proposal 60 remained active, with the voting window slated to conclude on October 29, 2026.
The implementation strategy involves attaching a newly developed policy contract—the YBOraclizedPolicy—to the existing WETH/crvUSD Curve pool. According to the proposal documentation, the underlying Curve pool contract will remain untouched, ensuring minimal disruption to liquidity providers. The Yield Basis DAO retains ownership of the policy contract, though the Curve emergency DAO has been granted the authority to disable it if necessary, providing a safety mechanism in the event of unforeseen complications.
Data from the Ethereum blockchain confirms that the YBOraclizedPolicy (located at address 0xaea95d551154443e73565be724d59d63d72f8a7d) has been successfully deployed, as verified at block 26292974. However, analysts note that the mere existence of the deployed code does not confirm its active integration into the production pool, as this remains contingent upon the successful passage and execution of the aforementioned governance votes.
Reimagining Liquidity: The Oracle-Driven Pricing Model
The core of the proposed overhaul is a shift from native Twocrypto fee curves to a dynamic, oracle-informed pricing and fee structure. Historically, Yield Basis pools operated with a static fee range of 1.36% to 2.82%. The new model seeks to re-center liquidity based on real-time market data provided by Pyth Pro.
Pyth Pro’s oracle publishes signed ETH/USD price reports at one-second intervals. Under the proposed policy, the protocol will require these signed reports to calculate both swap fees and the "price_scale"—the mathematical center of the Curve pool’s liquidity concentration. The protocol mandates that any submitted report must be newer than the currently stored data and must have been observed within the last 12 seconds to be deemed valid.
This integration creates a dynamic fee environment. Trades that move the pool toward the reported market price—referred to as "corrective swaps"—receive a significant discount, with fees starting at 0.50%. Conversely, trades that deviate from the market price are charged a higher base fee, capped at 1.75%. By utilizing external price feeds to dictate liquidity concentration, the protocol aims to reduce the impact of toxic flow while providing better execution for arbitrageurs who help align the pool with global market prices.
Performance Analysis and Backtesting Results
Yield Basis provided extensive simulation data to justify the transition. According to their 18-month backtest, a hypothetical WETH position utilizing the proposed design would have yielded 8.5% annually in ETH, a substantial increase over the 3.6% realized under the legacy configuration.
The simulator, which replayed historical Binance trade data alongside Pyth price feeds at 12-second intervals, highlights the efficiency of the new model in sideways or stable markets. However, the report also acknowledges a critical trade-off: performance during high-volatility events. During an August 2026 market rally where ETH surged 30% over several days, the proposed model’s price_scale lagged behind the market by as much as 12.4%. While the legacy system’s maximum lag was significantly lower at 6.3%, the proposed design demonstrated a faster long-term recovery and higher total returns across the full 18-month duration.
The team tested 49 different parameter combinations, finding that 44 of them yielded annual returns between 7.4% and 9.9%. This robustness suggests that the design is not overly sensitive to minor parameter fluctuations, though the team plans to treat the WETH pool as a "live test" to gather empirical data before rolling out the policy to other assets like cbBTC, WBTC, and tBTC.
Broader Implications for Decentralized Exchanges
The move by Yield Basis signals a growing trend in decentralized finance toward "hybrid" architectures that blend permissionless automated market making (AMM) with external oracle inputs. By effectively "oraclizing" the fee structure, the protocol attempts to solve the "lazy liquidity" problem inherent in static AMM pools.
However, this transition introduces new dependencies. The reliance on Pyth signatures necessitates trust in the oracle’s availability and the integrity of the data providers. While the Yield Basis team maintains that the pool remains permissionless—as anyone can deliver a report and no price update can block a user from withdrawing their assets—the protocol’s efficiency is now inextricably linked to the latency and accuracy of external price reporting.
Industry observers note that the success of this model will depend largely on the efficacy of the "keeper" mechanisms designed to update the pool in the absence of user-initiated trades. If the system experiences prolonged periods without an update, the fee structure may revert to less efficient states, potentially creating windows of opportunity for arbitrageurs to exploit stale pricing.
Future Roadmap and Governance Oversight
Looking ahead, Yield Basis has outlined a phased implementation schedule. The WETH pool serves as the first stage. Once the security fix and the new fee policy are fully operational, the protocol plans to initiate separate governance votes for its remaining BTC-linked pools.
Furthermore, the team has teased a roadmap item concerning higher amplification parameters. Early simulations suggest that increasing the amplification factor could further optimize returns, though the team has committed to providing detailed research and documentation before proposing any further adjustments.
As the October 29 deadline for proposal 60 approaches, the DeFi community remains focused on whether the implementation will proceed without technical friction. The Yield Basis case highlights the ongoing evolution of AMM design, where the need to patch security vulnerabilities is increasingly being used as an opportunity to implement more complex, capital-efficient, and market-responsive liquidity management systems. Whether this shift towards oracle-heavy pricing becomes a new industry standard remains to be seen, but the results of the upcoming WETH pool deployment will undoubtedly serve as a critical case study for other protocols operating on Curve Finance and beyond.
