European Open Finance infrastructure provider Powens has officially announced the launch of its Connector Agentic Factory, an innovative internal artificial intelligence system engineered to autonomously build new Open Finance connectors and diagnose and repair existing ones. The breakthrough technology promises to fundamentally alter the economics and operational velocity of financial connectivity across the continent, directly addressing one of the most persistent bottlenecks in the fintech and banking sectors: the manual maintenance and creation of application programming interfaces (APIs) and screen-scraping links that interface with disparate financial institutions.
Connectors serve as the crucial technical conduits that allow regulated financial institutions, fintech applications, digital lenders, wealth management platforms, and software vendors to securely retrieve consumer financial data or execute payments across banks and other institutions. Maintaining these links is an immense undertaking. Powens currently oversees more than 1,800 active connectors spread across multiple European jurisdictions. Historically, the lifecycle management of these connectors required significant human capital. Repairing a broken connector—often disrupted by routine bank updates or security protocol modifications—could consume up to two days of dedicated engineering work. Meanwhile, engineering a brand-new connector from scratch routinely demanded up to three weeks of meticulous development and testing.
The introduction of the Connector Agentic Factory drastically compresses these timelines. By deploying advanced automated agents to analyze how a target financial institution’s digital architecture operates, the system can autonomously formulate and deploy a working connection within a matter of hours. To date, Powens has successfully delivered 12 new connectors using this automated methodology across various European markets, effectively spanning banking accounts, wealth management portfolios, and complex document data sources.
Furthermore, the system has transformed operational recovery times for broken connections. Instead of requiring up to 48 hours of manual troubleshooting, the Agentic Factory autonomously investigates anomalies, identifies the root cause of the failure, and generates a prospective code fix. This reduces the typical repair window to a mere 10 to 15 minutes. Notably, 50 percent of these AI-generated proposed fixes are directly approved and deployed by Powens engineers without modification—a success rate that the company reports is steadily climbing as the underlying machine learning models mature and adapt to complex edge cases.
The Chronology and Evolution of Powens’ AI Integration
The deployment of the Connector Agentic Factory is the culmination of months of intensive research, internal testing, and strategic engineering prioritization at Powens. The journey toward fully autonomous infrastructure development began as an internal initiative to mitigate the scaling challenges associated with Europe’s hyper-fragmented banking ecosystem. As PSD2 legislation and broader Open Banking mandates spurred a proliferation of financial applications, the demand for reliable, high-speed connectivity outpaced traditional engineering capacity.
By mid-2024, Powens engineers laid the groundwork for generative and agentic workflows designed specifically to parse legacy banking architectures. Unlike consumer-facing generative AI tools that handle unstructured text, the Agentic Factory was engineered to operate within strict, deterministic programming parameters. Over the subsequent months, the system was stress-tested against a subset of European wealth and investment platforms, a sector characterized by intricate data structures and diverse reporting formats.
The milestone achievement of the technology was formally recognized on October 13, just days prior to the public rollout, when the Connector Agentic Factory was awarded Best Use of AI in Open Finance at the prestigious Open Banking Expo Awards held in London. This industry recognition validated both the technical ingenuity and the risk-managed deployment strategy chosen by Powens’ executive leadership. Currently, the system’s repair capabilities are fully integrated across all 1,800-plus Powens connectors, while its automated connector-building functionality is actively scaling across investment and savings data sources, with aggressive expansion plans targeting broader banking and credit categories in the coming months.
Strict Human Oversight and the Security Paradigm
A critical cornerstone of the Connector Agentic Factory’s deployment is its rigid adherence to governance, security, and human-in-the-loop oversight. Within the highly regulated financial services sector, autonomous AI systems are frequently viewed with skepticism due to concerns regarding data privacy, hallucination risks, and systemic operational vulnerabilities. Powens has explicitly designed its architecture to mitigate these risks by enforcing rigorous validation checkpoints at every stage of the pipeline.
The AI operates under strict boundary conditions. It is exclusively deployed to construct and repair technical connectors; it does not possess the capability to manipulate, read, or process raw consumer financial data, nor does it handle payment execution logic. Furthermore, the system functions under mandatory human supervision. Every single connector proposed by the AI, as well as every automated patch or fix, must be rigorously reviewed, vetted, and formally approved by human engineers at Powens before it is permitted to go live in a production environment.
This hybrid approach ensures that the deterministic reliability and institutional-grade security demanded by European regulators and financial partners are never compromised. By automating the repetitive, diagnostic legwork while retaining absolute human accountability for final deployment, Powens has established a compliant blueprint for how financial infrastructure providers can safely harness artificial intelligence.
Leadership Perspectives and Industry Implications
The leadership team at Powens has emphasized that the Agentic Factory is not merely an internal efficiency tool, but a foundational pillar of the company’s long-term corporate vision.
“Our ambition is to unlock the full potential of Open Finance and build the best infrastructure in Europe, covering every type of data and delivering unparalleled levels of quality and coverage in every market we serve,” stated Jean Guillaume, chief executive officer of Powens. “Powens’ Connector Agentic Factory is a direct expression of that ambition: AI lets us raise the bar on reliability and extend our coverage across Europe faster, without ever compromising on control.”
Echoing this sentiment, Fabien Oliveira, chief product and technology officer at Powens, highlighted the transformative effect the technology has on internal human resources and talent allocation. “Powens’ Connector Agentic Factory represents a shift in how we think about Open Finance infrastructure,” Oliveira noted. “It means our engineers spend less time on repetitive diagnostic work and more time on higher added-value activities such as improving the factory or the user and agent experience, which is exactly where we want their expertise focused.”
Industry analysts observing the launch point to several broader implications for the European Open Finance ecosystem. As the market matures, the competitive advantage will increasingly belong to infrastructure providers capable of scaling breadth and depth without incurring linear cost increases. By compressing connector deployment times from weeks to hours, Powens can enter new niche markets, support localized fintech innovators, and adapt to sudden regulatory or technical changes enforced by major banking institutions with unprecedented agility.
Moreover, the success of the Agentic Factory serves as an early proof point for the broader financial technology sector. It demonstrates that artificial intelligence, when paired with robust governance frameworks and deterministic guardrails, can successfully shoulder the burden of backend maintenance in mission-critical environments. As Powens looks toward the future, the company expects to extend similar agentic, AI-driven methodologies to other layers of its platform, potentially setting a new industry standard for infrastructure resilience and operational excellence across the European financial landscape.
